Chromecast restart button proves hardware reliability in digital world

Google Chromecast is the first product of the software. Almost all of its features are software-based, usually not even on Chromecast.

But Chromecast, for all its simplicity, has another hardware button, an emergency recovery button on the back. It is a testament to the reliability of physical access to software solutions.

Chances are, many will never use the Chromecast restart button. Whether you have the original Chromecast, the second generation model or the 4K Chromecast Ultra, this button has only one function. If all else fails, get ideas from others factory-reset apparatus return to the “fresh box” settings.

(The process is really interesting. Pressing the button forces Chromecast to run in USB boot mode, where it searches for a local copy of the signed system image և downloads it. Creative users have tried to use this mechanism download your own software on Chromecasts ևs!)

It is not a button press that can be allowed. Google warns with bold letters on its support page “This action will clear your data; it cannot be restored.” This is the only type you will use if you are selling your machine or causing problems so deep that the only solution is a clean sheet. Even activating it requires more attention than a simple reboot, asking users to hold down the little egg button long enough to make sure you really want to do it.

But it’s not the button mechanism, nor the physical hardware (it’s not a particularly touchy button) that is fascinating with the Chromecast restart button. It’s even a button.

Google Chromecast is one of the simplest plug-play devices around the clock. You take it out of the box, plug it in և HDMI port, և ok go. There is no remote or even power button. You just turn it on և it works without any user intervention. Then you need another device to control everything related to Chromecast, from installation to what you want to stream.

This is an exception to this one function. Because even such a simple device, which depends so much on software, is subject to software disputes. You may not be able to get your Chromecast to connect to your Wi-Fi, or your phone may refuse to recognize the connection. Equipment is the last resort. Unless the physical button is broken, or the entire device is not booted at all, it is a normal recovery tool that can not be compromised with software issues.

And that’s why, even on a digitally focused device like Chromecast, there’s still a push button in one case.
