LG Gram 17 review. Easier said than done
Seventeen. This laptop has a 17-inch screen. It also weighs 2.98 pounds.
Seeing a 17-inch laptop from four pounds is very unusual. The pair starts at $ 1,499 (our model is currently priced at $ 1,699), and you’re looking at a fairly targeted demographic. For that character, however, this laptop is back!
LG did not reset the wheel; The Gram 17 in 2020 is basically a repetitive update for the 2019 model. The company has made some major improvements. The layout of the chassis and keyboard has undergone minor changes, the battery is larger, and under the hood there is a new 10th Gen Core i7-1065G7. But the mass screen remains the only reason to buy this laptop, so you only have to spend $ 1,699 on it if you’re sure it’s what you want.
It’s hard to put into words how big a 17-inch screen is. The panel has a resolution of 2560 x 1600, with a 16:10 aspect ratio, so not only is it wide, but you get extra little vertical space compared to most popular laptops. Using the LG Gram 17 is more like using a desktop than doing 13 inches 16. 9 screens. That’s it tons I almost always had two (or even three) things open at once, and I never had to increase them.
It is also a beautiful sight. There is a slight glow, but I had a hard time working with the screen in bright environments to work around medium brightness. The colors looked great (the gram covers 99 percent of the sRGB gamut and 74 percent of the AdobeRGB), and the details were clear. The videos, of course, are massive. I watched half an episode Dark On Gram, the characters looked like miniatures when I finished the 13-inch device.
Of course, this is not a perfect display. There was a shock in the action scenes, and it was like I wouldn’t want to play games like “I’ll write 17.” in (Of course, it doesn’t have horsepower, however, it’s a gaming device. More on that later). ) It is not the brightest screen there. it reached a maximum brightness of 369 knots. That’s enough for a closed-door look, but you’ll probably want something brighter if you’re planning on creating something creative outside or near a bright window. The MacBook Pro 16 and Dell XPS 17 both get up to 500 knots. And there is no touch support. An omission that is understandable (sensor images come with a heavy penalty), but it’s just as disappointing with a price point of $ 1,699.
I sometimes thought the Grammy panel was too big. When I was working on the whole screen of Google Doc, there was so much emptiness on each side that I felt like I was wasting space. This is another reason to strongly argue that you need this type of car. If you do not work often with spray mode, you will most likely use some part of the panel, and at that time you can buy any 15 և 16 inch models at a lower price.
You don’t sacrifice portable portability for that screen area, though it’s not even close. At 2.98 pounds, the Gram 17 is surprisingly light in size. It’s a feather compared to the MacBook Pro 16 (,3 4.3), the Dell XPS 17 (,6 4.65) and the HP Envy 17 (0 6.02). But it’s even lighter than much smaller computers, including the Dell XPS 15 (4 pounds), the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 (3.4 pounds) and the HP Specter x360 15 (4.64 pounds). I think the massive chassis (14.98 x 10.34 x 0.69 inches) allows the Gram to feel lighter than it is because you expect it to weigh more. Exercising feels like nothing.
A laptop that usually has basic instructions in such light. However, the update “Gram 17” does nothing awful.
Battery life is exceptional. The 2020 gram has a battery of 80 watts (last year it was 72 watts), and I came out of it 10 hours later. (I worked on the car with about a few dozen of my loads on Chrome, Slack, some Zoom calls, and random YouTube or Spotify streaming on a better battery profile with a brightness of 200 bits). It’s better than I got from a MacBook. Pro, XPS 15 ցանկացած for any other laptop of this size. (Including 48W charger, it takes a while for Gram to give juice. Within an hour, it only raised the battery by 37%.)
The keyboard is great; it is illuminated, կարող you can tilt between one of the keys of the “low” and “high” brightness levels (although I didn’t notice much difference between them). The wide-brimmed chassis leaves plenty of room for numbering, another feature we don’t see in ultrabooks every day.
LG has made some changes to the keyboard since last year. Some keys (including Backspace, Enter, Shift և numpad 0) have been added, and a fourth column has been added to the number, which includes large access keys plus keys. I think Backspace is still small. I accidentally hit Harum Numlock every day, but otherwise the printing experience was great, and I kept my typical speeds.
Touchpad is smooth and comfortable to click. Last year’s Graham, however, was placed in the center of the chassis, not directly under the space domain. This meant that when I wrote my hand, I often rested on the chart, and sometimes I had trouble rejecting the palm. It’s not a bargain, but some people get used to it.
However, there are two areas where Gram 17 does not reach its price point. The first is the formation. It just doesn’t look right. LG has removed a large, visible node that last year’s model became slightly denser. But it’s still a thick laptop, and the base of the chassis is made of dark magnesium dark silver, which looks like cheap plastic. Gram doesn’t have to be ugly, but it looked like a toy next to the Xbox.
The second is the performance.
Gram 17 will get the job done for most people who are just looking. I downloaded several dozen Chrome tabs without any problems, and only saw the slowdown if multiple downloads were running in the background or files were copied. During the daily use, the chassis remained at a comfortable temperature, and I only listened to the fans or felt a serious fever under very heavy loads. I tilted the Cinebench R20 five times, and the processor remained consistent in the mid-1980s, never exceeding 90 degrees.
If you plan to play games, Graham is out. I tried to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider: With a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with its lowest possible parameters, the laptop managed to average 12fps on average. (It was a slow and stingy experience.) Adobe Premiere Pro took 30 minutes to complete the complex export, which is significantly worse than what we saw from other devices with integrated schedules such as the XPS 13 և Surface Laptop 3 (Not yet) says something else about the MacBook Pro or GPU). Even the main photo editing in the photo app was a slogan.
These results are not unexpected, and they do not put Gram 17 on a bad laptop. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. The goal of the “Gram” line is not to create working topics. It is possible to make it the lightest laptop! In that category, Gram 17 managed to climb to the top of its class.
This means that there is a very unique user for whom this laptop is going great. You have to demand a 17-inch screen, you have to take care of the lightness of everything, and you don’t have to plan to do anything that pays taxes on integrated graphics. If you check these three boxes, the LG Gram 17 is the obvious choice for you.
If it’s not you, there are better options.
