Qualcomm launches new Snapdragon 690 processor to add 5G budget phones
Qualcomm is launching its next 5G chipset today, the Snapdragon 690, the first product in its 6-series chips to receive support for the next generation network standard – although this will only support 5G’s slow 6GHz, not faster mmWave standard:
The new Snapdragon 690 also promises a number of other improvements over previous 6-series chips. Qualcomm says it will offer 20 percent better processor performance and 60 percent faster graphics performance than the Snapdragon 675.
But the addition of 5G support via the new Snapdragon X51 modem is especially important for the wider adoption of 5G, given that the company’s 6-series chips tend to appear in mid-range and budget phones, such as HMD’s Nokia. Motorola և LG. (Recently released Moto G Fast և Moto E, for example, use Snapdragon 632 և Snapdragon 665 chipsets և will cost $ 199 and $ 149, respectively.) Previously, 5G was limited to Qualcomm’s only high-end 8-series chips. (like the flagship Snapdragon 865) և semi-premium Snapdragon 765 և 768G.
And while phone makers will still need time to use the Snapdragon 690 (և presumably even longer before you can buy a 5G phone that costs between $ 150 and $ 200), this is an exciting development that should help you reach the technology. more customers than just those who buy the most expensive phones.
In addition to 5G, there are several other high-quality features that hit the top 6 for the first time. The Snapdragon 690 will support 120 Hz screens for fast refresh speeds, along with 4K HDR video (both are the first for the 6 Series). The Snapdragon 690 will allow you to create up to 192 megapixel cameras on secondary devices.
We expect that the first 5G phones running Snapdragon 690 in Q2 2020 will be among the companies HMD, LG, Motorola, Sharp and TCL, which are going to release devices with the new chipset.
