Aberg takes 3rd at Valspar Collegiate

PALM CITY, Florida – Texas Tech Junior Ludwig Aberg finished in third place at 11-under-par at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational while the No. 5 Red Raiders tied for eighth at the two-day, 54-hole tournament at the Floridian Golf Club.

Aberg shot 4-under in the final round on Tuesday with birds on his final two holes to earn his fourth top-10 finish of the season and third straight top-5 showing. Aberg birdied 20 of his 54 holes during the two days in Florida and was just three back of tournament winner Dylan Menante who won the event at 14-under for Pepperdine. The No. 10 Wave ran away with the tournament by shooting 34-under, while No. 26 Florida State was second at 20-under and No. 20 Wake Forest took third at -15.

Tech completed the tournament at 5-under as a team after posting 280-284- 283 – 847. No. 6 Arizona State was fifth at 13-under and No. 4 North Carolina shots 11-under to finish one spot ahead of the Red Raiders.

Baard Skogen finished 22nd overall at 2-under after a round of 72 on Tuesday, while Calum Scott shot 1-under over the three days to finish 31st overall. tech seniors Kyle Hogan shot 13-over and Sandy Scott 15-over to round out the Red Raider scorecard. skogen and Calum Scott each had 13 birds in the tournament.

Tech was tied for eighth at 4-under behind Pepperdine which has a commanding lead at 29-under, No. 6 Arizona State (-14) and No. 4 North Carolina (-12) after two rounds on Monday. Aberg shot 67-68 – 135 on the first day of the tournament, including making an eagle on No. 15 to move to 5-under in his second round before a double on his finishing hole. The tournament was the first for Sandy Scott Since an injury at the 2020 Maridoe Collegiate Invite. A two-time All-American, Sandy’s scoring averages of 70.2 in the 2018-19 season and 70.5 (2019-20) are the second and third best in program history. Along with his collegiate career, Sandy Scott has played in the Walker Cup and the US Open.

As a team, Tech is currently at No. 5 in the Golfstat rankings, No. 6 in the Golfweek ratings and at No. 8 in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. The Red Raiders return from Florida to play in the Aggie Invitational from April 9-10 in Bryan before playing their final regular-season event at the Thunderbird Collegiate on April 15-16 in Phoenix. The events lead into the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas from April 25-27 before the NCAA Tournament.
