Facebook shared scant details about his future metaworld, but a first look at a prototype headset can give some idea of how it will work. CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously described the company’s metaverse as “constant, synchronous environment“where people can gather, noting that it will have VR and AR components. In addition, Zuckerberg suggested that it will resemble a hybrid between existing social platforms, as well as include some gaming features.
The term “metaverse”Originated in science fiction, where several books and movies portray characters who use VR devices to immerse themselves in the fantastic digital world. Facebook’s metacosm seems to be inspired by these ideas, but it differs in that it encapsulates elements of both VR and AR. Although the two technologies are related, they are still clearly separated. VR is an immersion in the space created by a computer, while AR imposes digital objects on the real world.
Zuckerberg recently shared a photo where the CEO of Facebook was in a device similar to Oculus, noting that it is “Virtual reality technology, augmented reality and artificial intelligence of the new generation». Shortly afterwards, future technical director Andrew “BozBosworth published a picture on Twitter that carries a completely different prototype that connects the headset to the technologies that underlie the metaverse. Judging by the images, it is possible that Zuckerberg’s device, similar to the Oculus, supports VR and AR, which allows the user to move freely between these impressions. In contrast, the thinner Bosworth device is more reminiscent of existing AR and MR devices, such as Microsoft’s Magic Leap One or HoloLens. It is reasonable to assume that the Bosworth headset is designed to work only with AR, which, in turn, may lead to the conclusion that much of the metaverse can be focused on AR, not VR.

AR may be best for those who don’t like VR
At first glance, the idea that VR is not as important an aspect of the metaverse as previously thought may seem unreasonable. Eventually, Facebook bought Oculus for $ 2 billion in 2014 and has since invested heavily in the subsidiary. However, AR may be the best technology to encourage participation in the metaverse. Many people avoid virtual reality because of the lullabies and other related problems that can arise when immersed in a fully digital world. AR is also better suited for those who do not want to remove the headset for every real interaction. So far, Facebook has demonstrated its work on the AR handheld controller. It is wise to think that an AR headset and carrying on your hands will be the best combination for many rooms, such as an office, school or family home.
However, as Zuckerberg points out, the development of the metaverse and the products that will support it is still at an early stage. It is possible that many decisions about how it will work are still far from being made, and that these device prototypes are being developed simply to help inform this choice. Although Zuckerberg and Bosworth showcase different products, it is worth thinking that when Facebook’s multiverse really becomes a reality, consumers may use a completely different device to access it.
