Declare and finally move forward with these 5 quick, easy steps that make the acronym: Forward, as one well-known man and motivational speaker once said, “Now is the best time in your life to move forward!” Zig Ziggler .
1) Attack your decluttering with a vengeance.
At the very least, tackle this project a little at a time, such as one hour a day or room / area. A closet or desk / dresser drawer can also work well in a day. The bottom line is this: do something. No slackers allowed. Decide that you will continue until you finish each room, including outbuildings such as a garage, basement and shed. Also include the outside of your home, removing trash from your lawn, cleaning old unused bags of green grass and flower beds from old flower pots, etc.
Track your progress by going. Use an online spreadsheet or a simple email or electronic document to clean rooms and other areas. Print your list and use colored markers as you go through each item, for example, highlighting finished areas in green.
2) Go to stores, online and off, blogs, videos, social media sites and other places.
Visit local stores and online sites to review the latest organizational tools of the business. See if it suits your needs and check your budget. Find it on Pinterest, Facebook and other social media sites, blogs, videos and other content.
Save by recycling the things around you that you already have to create organizational tools. You can use an old plastic milk jug, cut off the top and use the bottom parts as storage containers for your family room remotes, pet toys, baby blocks, etc.
3) Imagine plans that have room for growth.
Grab your tracker from number 1 above and include it in a journal or diary where you also add notes for each area you need to mess with. Start your own profile for that area or set numbered points like this article where you list each room and then keep sub-headings about what you want to do there. For example, you could list, highlighting the word “family room” in yellow, with bullet points below it saying things like:
- Toss old magazines or donate to a local library.
- Place the remotes together in a small basket or on a small table.
- Remove items from the room that are in other places such as exercises, equipment (just set up an area or other room for this).
Use colored pencils, markers / highlighters, stickers and other writing tools to make your plans different and make something meaningful for you. Insert tape or glue cut-outs or printed pictures or digital pictures of the products you have in mind for each area, such as a magazine rack for the family room and a CD / DVD case for the teen’s bedroom.
4) Ask for feedback.
Take digital photos to share on Facebook, Pinterest and / or other social media sites to get feedback. Ask your friends and / or neighbors. They can also offer improvement suggestions and have organizational products to donate to your project.
5) Dig, split and beat the clutter beast!
Once you get a little feedback, then revise / improve your plan. As something new comes up in every field, throw away something old or donate it or recycle it. However, don’t let that clutter monster get in the way again. Break that clutter cycle once and for all.
