SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – No. 19 Michigan Tech defeated Lake Superior State 3-0 at Taffy Abel Arena on Friday, January 14. Blake Pietila made 21 saves to avoid his fourth game of the season and did not allow the Lakers to score in their second game in a row.
Brian Halonen, Brett Thorne and Justin Misiak all scored and assisted as the Huskies went 11-8-1 overall and 8-5 in the CCHA.
“I’m proud of the kids the way they played after a long time,” said technical coach Joe Shawhan. Said. “Every win is really important right now and I really appreciate how hard we are competing.”
Thorne scored his second goal for the 2:42 game winner in his fourth and second power play of the season. Halonen had a salvaged one-time counter. Misiak took the rebounds from behind the net and threw the puck forward. Thorne was in no hurry and sniped the top corner for his fifth career goal.
Halonen, with the teams playing 4 on 4, gave the Huskies a 2-0 6:53 lead in the second period with the team leader’s 13th goal of the season. A shot from the slot was saved by Bliss and Halonen was on the doorstep to hit his 45th career goal. Thorne had the second assist.
Tech had to take a penalty with 4:25 left in the third half, but didn’t let the shot go to Pietila. LSSU pulled out its goalie and Misiak fired four shots into goal before freezing the game with a fourth goal of the season in a kickback from the center ice with 47 seconds left. Colin Swoyer assisted the goal.
Pietila stopped three shots on the first, 12 on the second, and six on the third. Ethan Langenegger made 25 saves for the home team. Behind each goalkeeper was a puck hitting iron.
“The guys supported Blake well,” Shawhan added. “The rebound control was good and he made a great save in a direction in the first period. It was really good teamwork tonight.”
Tech was 2v1 in power play and 3v3 in penalty kick.
The teams are playing for the fourth time this season to complete the CCHA series on Saturday at 6:07 PM.
