Red Raiders break six records Saturday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Texas Tech track and field record book was re-written in several events as the squad wrapped up its trips in California and Florida Saturday evening.

Tom Jones Memorial Invitational – Florida

The records in the Swamp started to fall beginning with Gabe Oladipo in the hammer throw. On his second throw, Oladipo broke the 63.05m (2016-10) barrier that had been sitting since 2015 by Kole Weldon. On his final and sixth throw, Oladipo launched a mark of 63.21m (207-4) final the final touch as he now holds the top two marks in Tech history and seven overall in the top 10.

Soon after in the 100 hurdles, Demisha Roswell etched a time of 12.87 (1.5w) in the prelims to become the new record holder, taking down Alaysha Johnson’s time of 12.92 in 2019.

Meanwhile in the 800, Moad Zahafi put the world and the NCAA track and field community on notice. The Moroccan blazed past the 2022 NCAA indoor 800 champion and 2021 800 runner-up at the NCAA outdoor meet in the final 200 meters. Zahafi got away from the pack in significant fashion for a blistering time of 1:43.69, a new personal best. It is the world leading and No. 3 all-time NCAA Marks. Only Michael Saruni of UTEP (1:43.25, 2018) and Donavan Brazier (1:43.55, 2016) have run faster. The mark broke Tech legend Jonathan Johnson’s 2004 mark of 1:44.77 set back at the US Olympic trials.

in the 100 dash, Rosemary Chukwuma Finished with a time of 11.05 (PR) as she took down Cierra White’s 2013 record of 11.09. As of Saturday night, the time is sixth in the NCAA and tops in the Big 12.

Other notables included Kayli Johnson placing second in the shot put at 17.08m (56-.5). In the men’s 100 dash, Terrence Jones, Jr. ran his first collegiate race in the event and finished second with a time of 10.09, which is third in the NCAA.

Also, the 4×400 team of Kiah Dubarry-Gay, Knowledge Omovoh, Aneesa Scott and Michaela Lewis clocked in at 3:31.74 for a season-best time and the sixth-best all-time mark in Tech history. In the men’s 4×100, Jones Jr., Jacob Shelton, Ashton O’Conner and Courtney Lindsey combined for a time of 38.90 for the fifth-fastest all-time mark in Tech history. It ranks sixth in the NCAA.

Mt. Sheet Relays – California

The final two records to go down were courtesy of Monae’ Nichols. On her first attempt, Nichols landed in the sand pit at 6.86m (22-6.25) as she broke her own school record of 6.80m (22-3.75) set at the Texas Relays earlier this year. Then on her third attempt, she registered a mark of 6.89m (22-7.25) as it was winded-aided (3.1). The top wind-aided mark of 6.55m (21-6) was done by Viershanie Latham in 2017. Nichols’ legal wind mark will put her at No. 2 globally as she now owns the No. 2 and No. 3 marks. In her flight, Nichols defeated Tara Davis, a 2021 Olympic finalist.

Other notable finishes included Ruth Usoro and Ruta Lasmane making their 2022 outdoor debut with the Red Raiders. Usoro finished second at 13.84m (45-5) and Lasmane third with a mark of 13.80m (45-3.50). Onaara Obamuwagun had a wind-aided mark (2.2) of 13.54m (44-5.25), placing fifth.

Over in the men’s field, Chris Welch placed fourth at 15.91m (52-2.50) (wind-aided, 2.1). Jalen Seals Finished ninth, landing 15.05m (49-4.50). Sydney Sapp in the high jumped topped out at 1.80m (5-10.75). Meanwhile, Jack Scarborough (2.17m, 7-1.50) and Caleb Wilborn (2.12m, 6-11.50) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
