1. Padlock or combination lock
Padlocks and combination locks are the most versatile safety products when traveling abroad. You should use it from the moment you leave your front door until you return.
You can buy a set of 4 padlocks with all the keys. That way you don’t have to carry a whole set of keys to get into your luggage! Or try a combination lock. No keys are involved, but you need to remember the combination. Make sure the lock really fits through the zippers of your luggage!
Either way, the padlocks and combination locks are pretty simple for this:
- Lock your luggage when on public transport or when leaving in a hotel luggage room.
- Lock a locker or storage box in your dorm room.
- You can also use it to lock 2 or 3 pieces of luggage together. This makes them difficult to pick up and steal.
2. Money belt
An easy way to hide your money or credit card while traveling is to use a money belt. They come in a wide range of options for neck pouches, waist bands, real belts with zipper section and leg straps. These are all great ways to keep your luggage safe.
If you keep this money belt under your clothes, there is virtually no way to get it in your pocket. However, if you are constantly taking money out of your money belt in a public place, it will become very clear to any thieves who may try to kill you. We suggest that you still use a small wallet and save your money belt for your cash, passport and credit card.
3. Cable lock
Use a cable lock to lock a piece of luggage together in the luggage room or attach your luggage around the seat while you sleep. They can be opened with a key or by a combination. If you use a lot of public transport, it is an excellent security product to use.
We have used it by zippers and other padlocks to hold them together. On trains overnight, we set the bell on the cable so that no one could touch our backpacks without listening to us.
4. Mesh safety products
Mesh security products are becoming very popular among travelers, especially those who have not traveled before. They will give you peace of mind that your backpack cannot be cut.
It is basically a handbag, backpack, camera case or bag and many other types of luggage with metal mesh sewn into the lining of the belt. This will prevent any potential thief from cutting your bag. However, it will not stop you from a snatch and run attack.
If you are planning to buy mesh safety products, make sure you buy one with mesh sewn into the lining. Don’t buy nets that go over your luggage. They are cumbersome and very tight to attach and connect properly.
5. TSA locks
I heard you ask what are TSA locks? TSA stands for Transportation Security Administration, the agency of the US Department of Homeland Security. A TSA lock is a special type of lock or compound lock that can be unlocked by customs officials upon entering the USA.
If you do not use the TSA lock, your padlock / combination lock is likely to be broken by customs officials. There is also the possibility that they may cut your luggage.
