What are gems?

The word gem can mean different things. I saw a petrified marine life called a gem. An ordinary stone made of copper and iron with nice colors could also be considered a gem. As we can see, it is difficult to reach any objective consensus on what exactly a gemstone is.

Examples of mineral gemstones would most often include rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

Precious stones have been here since ancient times. People collected materials, both natural and artificial, and placed what would commonly be called “stones” in jewelry and other rare items. Over the centuries, however, the term “gemstone” has become widely recognized as meaning a naturally occurring mineral that, after reshaping, grinding and polishing, becomes highly desirable for its beauty, rarity and durability, which provides lasting pleasure.

However, to answer the question, “What is a gem?”, We must realize that these are minerals that are formed in various environments deep in the Earth. They have a certain chemical composition and an ordered atomic arrangement, thanks to which their physical and optical properties are constant. These properties, such as density and refraction, must be accurately measurable in order to be used as a way to identify a mineral as a gemstone.

This article would not be complete without mentioning the queen of gems, “Diamante.” It is unique among gemstones in that it is composed of a single chemical element, “carbon” and, like all gemstones, comes from the depths of the earth, created over millions of years by heat and pressure. Without volcanic eruptions, these rarest gems would never reach the earth’s surface.

The gemstone has been said to involve the study of mineralogical foundations such as formations, physical properties of origin, structural crystallographic, chemical and physical properties. Simply put, most of us will agree that a gemstone is prized for its great beauty and perfection. Appearance is almost the most important attribute of precious stones. When we look at a gemstone, we are attracted to the brilliance, luster, fire and clarity or depth of color when deciding on the beauty of a gemstone.
