Why does Ferret steal things

The word ferret has its origin in Latin and is translated Little thief. With that knowledge, you shouldn’t be surprised that Ferret likes to steal things and collect them.

My ferret takes anything they can pull. I have seen my little, pound girl trying to carry a dog’s sterilized bone; The bone is heavier than hers. (The only reason she was not successful was when the dog saw her dragging the bone across the room and intervened.) They took my shoes, my wrist and toys. They snatched up bookmarks, balls and food plates. They have stolen computer mice, tissues and socks. They have removed apples, potatoes and staples. If they can steal an item, they will.

So, once I get an object of my ferret desire, they collect it. Everything stolen ends up in one place. Once I clean up, they can move their storage to another location, but usually only have one cache at a time. I found the cache under their nest. Once the store was behind the TV and at one point they actually put everything into one of my husband’s speakers. Right now, my babies like to move objects into their Tower of Fun, which is a tube that twists up and down. Obscure people like to slide along the slopes of the fun tower, so it’s a little weird that they block their fun slippery path with toys. But they do.

Why?

Because I do not speak ferret, and because my ferret men do not speak, I can only guess based on their natural behavior in the wild. Polcat (tamed by our housewife Ferret) is a carnivore. They are hunters. They kill things smaller than themselves (usually small, but I’ve seen videos of Ferret killing things bigger than them). So, Ferret kills a mouse and eats it. When it is finished, it hides what is left. If the ferret kills an animal that is too large to eat in one sitting, the ferret then places the corpse to finish. And, in all of these cases, Ferret tries to prevent other animals from getting their prey.

I think that’s the best explanation for why Ferret steals, but I have one more idea. I often see Ferret sleeping in the middle of stolen objects. Usually, when they are sleeping in their cache, items like small stuffed toys and other soft things are soft and fluffy. So, my second assumption is that Ferret likes to make comfortable beds.
